Kikkuli is out to examine Heron opponents in an exciting Sandown match

On Thursday night at Sandown, in the Chasemore Farm Stud Staff Heron Stakes, Frankel's half-brother Kikkuli is hoping to advance in his career.

The colt, owned by Juddmonte, has an amazing pedigree because he is by Kingman and the final foal out of Kind, the mare who also gave birth to the legendary Frankel, Noble Mission, Bullet Train, and Joyeuse.

In November, he made his racecourse debut in a novice race at Newmarket, where Ralph Beckett's Zoum Zoum defeated him by two and a half lengths. Zoum went on to win a Listed race in France and place second in the Greenham.

Third behind them came Eve Johnson Houghton's Balmacara, who has since returned after winning two novice races at Doncaster, and fourth was a very noteworthy name in the William Haggas-trained Economics, who won the Dante at York by a huge margin and may be a Derby candidate.

Kikkuli made a reappearance at Headquarters this year, winning a seven-furlong novice race by a neck this time, with three other winners after him.

Ryan Moore, who accompanied him on his previous appearance, will be his partner when he advances to the Listed class for trainer Harry Charlton.

“We’re looking forward to him, his maiden win has worked out very well as I think there have been numerous winners come out behind him,” said Juddmonte’s Barry Mahon. It’s a jump-up in class on Thursday, but we’re happy with the horse and Harry is happy, so let’s see how we get on. Hopefully, it will be a nice stepping-stone to something better later in the year. He has a lot of pressure on him, but he’s a lovely horse and I think whatever he does on Thursday he’ll be a nice horse later in the year and we’ll have plenty of fun with him.”
