Zarakem prepares for a trip to York next month
Jerome Reynier has praised Zarakem, calling him “better than ever” as he prepares for a trip to York next month, ahead of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
The four-year-old last raced in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot, where he finished a close second to Auguste Rodin, beaten by just three-quarters of a length while leaving a strong field behind.
Earlier in the season, Zarakem showcased his talent in France by winning the Group Two Prix d’Harcourt at ParisLongchamp, though he had an unusual setback in the Prix Ganay at the same venue. However, he bounced back impressively at Royal Ascot, and now the Juddmonte International at York’s Ebor meeting is on his agenda.
This race is intended as a key preparation for the prestigious Arc later in the year.
Zarakem has handled his travels well and has impressed his trainer with his condition leading up to another trip across the Channel, with Paris the target for autumn.
Reynier expressed satisfaction with the horse's excellent recovery after Royal Ascot, noting his maturity and strength. He views the upcoming race as a crucial step toward the Arc, though it will be challenging due to strong competitors like City Of Troy and Calandagan. Despite the tough field, Reynier praised the horse's exceptional performance at Royal Ascot and acknowledged the need to move past the Prix Ganay, where he was ridden too aggressively. Overall, he is optimistic about the horse's progress and looks forward to seeing him compete at a high level again.
