Impero Targets Ascot Four-Timer in Ladbrokes Hurdle
Cian Collins’ in-form Impero is set to chase a fourth consecutive victory in the Ladbrokes Hurdle at Ascot on Saturday.
Since transferring from Michael Cleary’s yard in September, the five-year-old has flourished under Collins, starting with a promising second-place finish in a Listowel handicap hurdle. This marked the beginning of a remarkable turnaround for the gelding, who had previously gone winless in 17 Flat outings.
Impero broke his maiden in style at Downpatrick, dominating from the front under Jordan Gainford to win by seven lengths. He then showcased his ability at Cheltenham, where Danny Gilligan guided him to a narrow but decisive victory, holding off Norman Fletcher after taking the lead at the final hurdle.
His most recent outing saw him complete the hat-trick at Musselburgh, again leading from the front and pulling clear to secure a commanding seven-length triumph in a novice hurdle.
Despite the stiffer competition awaiting at Ascot, Collins is optimistic about Impero’s chances:
"He seems in good form and is an improving horse, so hopefully he can be competitive on Saturday."
"It’s a step-up in grade, but he couldn’t have been more impressive at Musselburgh. A strong gallop will suit him, and I think the race is set up perfectly for his style."
"He’s settled in very well with us, loves jumping, and is enjoying himself. Hopefully, there’s still some improvement to come."
Collins confirmed that Ascot has been the target for Impero since his Cheltenham success, and future plans will hinge on how he performs this weekend:
"We’ll focus on Saturday first, then see where we go from there."
With a strong foundation and evident momentum, Impero is one to watch as he steps up in class at Ascot.
