Spillane’s Tower Poised for Glory in King George VI Chase

Jimmy Mangan is optimistic that Spillane’s Tower will deliver a strong performance in the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase at Kempton Park, a highlight of the Boxing Day racing calendar.

The talented dual Grade One-winning novice is the favourite among an elite field of 11 runners after his outstanding second-place finish to JP McManus-owned Fact To File in the John Durkan at Punchestown. McManus has opted to separate his rising stars, entering Spillane’s Tower in the King George while Fact To File faces Galopin Des Champs at Leopardstown.

For Mangan, a Grand National-winning trainer with Monty’s Pass in 2003, competing in the King George is a career milestone. “I never thought I’d have a runner in the King George, let alone a real contender,” said the Cork-based trainer. “He’s in excellent form and has improved significantly since the John Durkan. He should put up a big performance if he runs to his potential.”

Mark Walsh, who knows the horse well, will partner Spillane's Tower. While conditions at Kempton may not favour softer ground, Mangan is confident in his charge’s ability.

“It’s been a dry year, and we’d have preferred softer ground, but as long as it’s good and safe, we’re happy,” he said. “He deserves his place at the top table; if everything goes well, he won’t be far away.”

Strong Contenders in the Line-Up 

Spillane’s Tower faces stiff competition, including French raider Il Est Francais, who excelled in the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase over the same course last year. Despite being pulled up in his last outing at Auteuil, jockey James Reveley is optimistic about a return to form.

“He’s in good order, and the conditions suit him,” Reveley said. “Getting him into a good rhythm is crucial at Kempton, and I’m excited to be part of such a prestigious race.”

Meanwhile, Dan Skelton’s Grey Dawning leads the home team after a strong Betfair Chase performance. Initially ruled out for Christmas, Grey Dawning has recovered remarkably well.

“He’s been brilliant at home, and we’re in a strong position going into the race,” Skelton shared. “While I’m not claiming he’s the favourite, I wouldn’t swap him for anything. He’s climbing the ladder, and we’re optimistic about his chances.”

The grey chaser has drawn comparisons to the legendary Desert Orchid, a four-time King George winner, although Skelton remains cautious about such parallels.

“A grey horse is always popular, and if Grey Dawning continues to perform, he could become a household name,” Skelton said.
