Willie Mullins will enter six runners in Scottish National

In an attempt to increase his lead in the competition to become Britain's top trainer, Willie Mullins will enter six horses in the Coral Scottish Grand National at Ayr on Saturday.

Following I Am Maximus's Grand National victory at Aintree, Mullins easily defeated both Paul Nicholls, the defending champion, and his former student Dan Skelton. As a result, Mullins is now the clear favourite to become the first Irish trainer to win the British title since Vincent O'Brien did so twice in the 1950s.

Six of the 26 races declared for the £200,000 feature on Saturday's Ayr card are handled by the Closutton handler, who is represented in all eight of the races.

The two most likely candidates for the trainer seem to be Mr. Incredible, who shows up just seven days after unseating his rider at The Chair, and Macdermott, a recent Fairyhouse scorer. The sextet is completed by Ontheropes, Spanish Harlem, Klarc Kent, and Wellhavewan.

Although Nicholls is represented by the elite top-weight fighters Stay Away Fay and Broken Halo, Mullins is unlikely to have everything his way. Skelton will be hoping that Ballygrifincottage can return him to the top of the table.

Git Maker, trained by Jamie Snowden, and Anglers Crag, the winner of Brian Ellison's Eider Chase, are also included.

With Mullins running Westport Cove, Bialystok, and Alvaniy, Nicholls saddling last year's winner Rubaud and his stablemate, and Skelton depending on County Hurdle runner-up L'Eau du Sud, the title-chasing trio fires major shots at the £100,000 Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle.

Uncle Phil is entered in the first Scotty Brand Handicap Chase, popular veteran Sharjah is entered in the CPMS Novices’ Champion Handicap Chase, and impressive Punchestown winner Billericay Dickie is entered in the Tennent’s Novices’ Hurdle. There are a total of eighteen runners on the afternoon card for Mullins.
