Willie Mullins Achieves 100th Cheltenham Festival Win with Champion Bumper Victory
Willie Mullins achieved an impressive milestone at the Cheltenham Festival when Jasmin De Vaux, ridden by Patrick Mullins, secured his 13th victory in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper, marking his 100th win at the prestigious event. The master of Closutton first tasted Festival success 29 years ago with Tourist Attraction, followed by Wither Or Which in the Champion Bumper a year later.
Fast forward to the present day, Mullins stands as the most successful trainer in the history of the National Hunt racing spectacle, boasting 94 wins prior to this year's event, surpassing his rival Nicky Henderson. Despite Henderson facing setbacks with the withdrawal of key contenders, Mullins had a strong Irish contingent poised for success, culminating in his momentous century.
The path to the milestone was paved with victories, including the Champion Hurdle triumph by State Man, Mares' Hurdle win by Lossiemouth, and Gaelic Warrior's victory in the Arkle. As the week progressed, favourites Ballyburn and Fact To File claimed wins, setting the stage for the historic moment in the Queen Mother Champion Chase, which unfortunately eluded El Fabiolo after being pulled up.
The Coral Cup and Grand Annual races passed without a Mullins victory, heightening the anticipation for Jasmin De Vaux's win in the Champion Bumper. Mullins expressed his joy at the achievement while acknowledging the challenges faced by his colleague Henderson.
Reflecting on his career and the team effort behind his success, Mullins credited his owners, including Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, for their contribution. He highlighted the importance of teamwork and praised his son Patrick for his role in reaching the milestone.
Patrick Mullins, in turn, recognised his father's resilience and innovative thinking, which has shaped their success. He emphasised the value of taking risks, learning from mistakes, and maintaining positive relationships in the sport. Ultimately, Mullins' journey to 100 Cheltenham winners reflects a combination of determination, teamwork, and a willingness to embrace challenges.
