Roger Varian is now focused on seeking compensation in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes after Charyn fell short against Tribalist in the Prix du Moulin at ParisLongchamp.
Varian admitted it was a "frustrating watch" as Charyn, like the rest of the field, allowed Tribalist to establish a commanding lead and narrowly missed the chance to become the first horse to win the Queen Anne Stakes, Prix Jacques le Marois, and Moulin in the same season.
This marked just Charyn’s second defeat in what has otherwise been a stellar year, cementing his status as one of the top and most consistent milers in the division.
Varian is now eyeing a return to Ascot, where Charyn won impressively during Royal Ascot, with the horse currently the 5-2 favourite for the Qipco British Champions Day event according to Paddy Power.
"It was a frustrating race to watch, but he ran exceptionally well, and you have to acknowledge the winner when you finish second," said Varian.
"In hindsight, yes, he did get a bit far back. They spotted the winner six or seven lengths ahead turning for home, which is tough to overcome on this ground. Reviewing the race, it developed in that way, and it wasn’t initially apparent in the first furlong. The race stretched out from halfway, but Charyn came from behind and almost closed in on the winner. He ran a tremendous race, and I don’t think we should be disappointed. Losing a shoe probably wasn’t ideal, but on this type of ground, he might not have even noticed it. It’s frustrating because I believe he ran well enough to win, but it just wasn’t his day. We congratulate the winner and move forward."
Varian, who secured the QEII with Bayside Boy in 2022, added: "We would love to head to Ascot for the QEII. It has always been his autumn target, and with six weeks to go, there’s plenty of time. As long as he remains sound and healthy, there’s no reason why he won’t be there."
