Nicky Henderson aims to add a notable achievement to his distinguished career as Under Control heads to the highly competitive Guinness Galway Hurdle.
In the past decade, only three trainers have won this prestigious handicap at Ballybrit: Willie Mullins with five victories, Tony Martin with four, and Joseph O’Brien with Tigris River. Under Control, owned by JP McManus like Tigris River, has not raced since January, when she finished second to Mullins' Ashroe Diamond in a Grade Two mares' event at Doncaster.
Originally slated to run in the Morebattle Hurdle at Kelso in March, Under Control was sidelined by a health issue that affected several horses at Seven Barrows before Cheltenham. Since then, her focus has shifted to the Galway Hurdle.
Henderson stated that the plan for Under Control has been in place for a while, with Nico de Boinville suggesting Galway as the right race after a break at Martinstown. He expressed confidence in her despite her limited experience and acknowledged the challenges of graded races.
Henderson has previously competed at Galway, but not in hurdles, stating he enjoys the experience. While he sees Daddy Long Legs as a potential competitor, he is optimistic about Under Control’s chances.
McManus’s racing manager Frank Berry mentioned that Under Control faced setbacks but is in good form now. He noted the competition in the race and highlighted the need for luck. Berry also mentioned Risk Belle’s struggle with big handicaps and her need to regain form.
Patrick Mullins discussed Winter Fog as a top contender, noting the challenges of competing off a high weight. He also mentioned the potential of Daddy Long Legs, who was expected to perform better, and highlighted Anotherway and Williamstowndancer as horses to watch.
Noel Meade’s Jesse Evans has placed well in the past, and while he may not be better than last year, Meade remains hopeful for a competitive performance.
