Unbeaten Valgrand and Potters Charm Set for Showdown at Cheltenham

Valgrand and Potters Charm will defend their undefeated records over hurdles in an eagerly anticipated clash at Cheltenham in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle on Friday.

Dan Skelton’s Valgrand, coming off an impressive Grade Two victory at Cheltenham last month, looks to solidify his growing reputation as he steps up in distance. The six-year-old, owned by Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, has shown a preference for firm ground.

“He’s done very well at Cheltenham, acts beautifully on the track, and loves good ground,” noted Highclere’s Harry Herbert. “This race gives us a chance to see where he fits in the broader picture.”

Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Potters Charm also enters with high expectations, having excelled at Cheltenham’s season opener. However, his team believes he’ll show even greater potential on softer ground.

“He’s done well despite the ground, and we’re looking forward to seeing how he handles this level,” said assistant trainer Willy Twiston-Davies. “With softer ground, I think we’ll see an even better performance from him.”

Elsewhere on the card, Gordon Elliott’s seasoned Grade One winner Conflated will tackle cross-country fences for the first time in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase.

The 10-year-old, owned by Gigginstown House Stud, has achieved top placements in both the Gold Cup and the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. Gigginstown’s Eddie O’Leary expressed cautious optimism, stating, “It’s an experiment to see if he takes to the fences and enjoys the experience.”

Joining Conflated in the cross-country switch are Nicky Henderson’s Mister Coffey, Joseph O’Brien’s Busselton, and Gavin Cromwell’s Fameaftertheglory, promising an action-packed lineup.
