Tylick is thankful for Flying Clarets’ contribution

Freddy Tylicki looks back fondly on his time with Flying Clarets, the 2008 John Smith’s Cup winner that helped him make a name for himself in the racing world. Tylicki was a 7lb claimer when he joined Richard Fahey’s yard in Malton in January of that year. With a solid foundation in horse racing from his time with Jim Bolger and his father Andrzej, a three-time champion jockey in Germany, Tylicki quickly rose to success. He became champion apprentice in 2009 and went on to ride Group One winners before his career was cut short.

Despite his early success on Flying Clarets, Tylicki felt he kicked for home too soon in the race at York’s Knavesmire. The win was a significant moment for Tylicki, as it marked one of his early career victories and helped boost his reputation in the racing world. He recalls the thrill of the win and the determination of the mare to keep battling on.

The John Smith’s Cup has a history of being won by apprentice jockeys, highlighting the opportunities available to young riders on big racing days. While some criticise the crowded schedule of high-quality races on the same day, Tylicki sees both the positives and negatives of the situation.

Tylicki is grateful to Fahey for taking a chance on him and providing him with opportunities to ride quality horses. His time at Fahey’s yard helped him grow as a jockey and opened doors for him in the racing world. Tylicki now works as a pundit on Sky Sports Racing and as a bloodstock agent, with notable success in buying Derby runner-up Ambiente Friendly.

As Tylicki reflects on his career and his time with Flying Clarets, he remains appreciative of the opportunities and experiences that have come his way. He hopes to continue finding success in racing, despite the challenges that may come his way.
