Tom: "Brown Panther is an absolute superstar"
Tom Dascombe reflected on Brown Panther's career, calling him "an absolute superstar" and highlighting his remarkable achievements, including his 2014 Irish St Leger victory.
Brown Panther, bred and part-owned by former England footballer Michael Owen, was a consistent performer in the staying division. With 11 wins from 28 starts, his appeal came from both his undeniable talent and his relentless determination.
His impressive record featured victories at Royal Ascot and the Goodwood Cup, a second place in the St Leger, and numerous international races. Despite his success, a Group One win eluded him until his standout 2014 season. He secured wins at Chester and Sandown, and after a courageous performance in the Gold Cup at Ascot, he clinched the Irish St Leger, triumphing by six and a half lengths over a strong field, including Aidan O’Brien’s Gold Cup winner Leading Light.
Brown Panther also claimed the Dubai Gold Cup the following spring, but his career was cut short when he suffered a fatal injury while defending his Irish St Leger title in 2015.
Dascombe reminisced fondly about Brown Panther, his only Group One-winning horse. "He was an absolute superstar," Dascombe said. "From winning at Southwell to his Classic win in Ireland, and even his Meydan victory, he was exceptional. We had some great days with him, despite the heartbreak of his tragic end."
Dascombe took solace in knowing Brown Panther passed away doing what he loved. "He gave me the best days of my career," Dascombe reflected. "He was a warrior who truly enjoyed being a racehorse and excelled at it."
