Thunder Run took the lead to win the race

Thunder Run led from start to finish to win the £150,000 Clipper Handicap at York.

Trained by Karl Burke and owned by the race sponsor Steve Parkin, Thunder Run had previously shown promise with a second at Wetherby and back-to-back victories at Thirsk and Hamilton in July. Although he finished only third as the odds-on favourite in the Summer Cup at Thirsk earlier this month, he improved dramatically to win at York at 6-1 under David Egan, beating Mirsky by half a length.

Burke commented: “It’s great to get a win, especially for Steve, in a race he sponsors. Thunder Run is a promising horse but still very raw. It wasn’t planned for him to lead, but David Egan felt he wasn’t going fast enough and decided to go for it. If another horse had challenged him, it might have cost him the race as he was in fresh air in the last 100 yards. For now, a mile is his ideal distance.”

Burke also trained the third-placed Holloway Boy, adding: “Holloway Boy ran his usual solid race, though he’s carrying a lot of weight at the moment. I think the Balmoral on Champions Day will suit both horses.”

In the sensory-junction.co.uk Autism Awareness EBF Stallions Nursery Handicap, Angel Hunter narrowly defeated Age Of Gold in a determined finish. Trained by Richard Hannon, Angel Hunter had never placed higher than third in his three previous starts but held the lead under Ryan Moore despite a late challenge from Age Of Gold.

Hannon said: “I initially considered running Angel Hunter in the sales race, but it would have been too sharp. It’s fitting that he won, especially since he’s owned by the same people as Witch Hunter, who I thought had won the Hungerford on Saturday. Angel Hunter has been inconsistent this season but is a typical Camacho. He has some good entries, and while he’s a horse for next year, I’m pleased with his performance today. Ryan did a great job from stall 17. I wish I could have him more often; he’s made it!”
