The third victory of Sammy Jo Bell at Doncaster

Legends race with a memorable third victory at Doncaster.

Having previously triumphed in 2019 and 2022, Bell’s latest win was particularly remarkable given she had returned from an anterior cruciate ligament injury to compete. As in past years, she rode for her former boss, Richard Fahey, who provided the seven-year-old gelding Hartswood for the event.

Hartswood was a 10-1 outsider, while Terries Royale, ridden by Megan Nicholls, was the 3-1 favourite and appeared to justify that status by taking a commanding lead early on. However, Terries Royale began to drift left, crossing the track and losing significant ground along the far rail.

Seizing the opportunity, Bell and Hartswood closed in and ultimately secured victory by three-quarters of a length, completing a hat-trick of wins in the race for the retired Flat jockey.

"It’s incredible, and what makes it even more special is riding for Richard, who played such a huge role in my career," Bell said. "I called him a couple of weeks ago, and he entered a horse for me. Being part of this event is truly amazing."

"This race supports a fantastic cause, honouring Graham and benefiting the Injured Jockeys Fund. It’s really special to be involved. I didn’t know who had pulled clear, but I kept pushing, and it all worked out."

Bell reflected on the thrill of her victory, saying, "Winning this race is always an amazing experience. Maybe I should retire now while I’m ahead!"

The event, which also featured notable names like multiple Group One winner Gerald Mosse and Grand National-winning jockey David Mullins, was particularly poignant this year as it was named after Lee, who suffered life-changing injuries in a fall last November.

Bell, who has personally benefited from the support of the Injured Jockeys Fund during her ACL recovery, added, "Last April, I had a fall, and my ACL snapped. The rehab at Jack Berry House was fantastic, and their support was invaluable."
