The Shunter is set to defend his title in the Club Godolphin Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket next month.
The 11-year-old has been a dual-purpose star for Emmet Mullins, notably winning at the Cheltenham Festival in 2021. This will be his second outing—and first on the Flat—since claiming the prestigious staying contest nearly a year ago. He missed both the Chester Cup and a planned run at Royal Ascot earlier this season due to fast ground conditions.
Despite his lengthy absence, Mullins is pleased with his veteran's progress at home and is confident he’ll travel across the Irish Sea in top shape.
"Fingers crossed, he should be back at Newmarket for the Cesarewitch," Mullins stated. "We aimed for the Chester Cup, but the ground was good to firm, and we also prepared for the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot, but again, the ground was firm. He’s been in training all year; we just didn’t want to risk him on that surface."
"He had a brief break in June around Ascot, but he’s back in action and eager to please. He’s done so much for us over the years, so we need to take care of him regarding ground conditions. Hopefully, he can perform well again in a few weeks."
