The BHA launches an investigation into the tragic death of jockey Keagan Kirkby following a point-to-point mishap

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) is currently investigating the tragic passing of 25-year-old point-to-point jockey Keagan Kirkby. The incident took place during a race in Charing, Kent, on Sunday when Kirkby's horse deviated from its intended course and collided with a fence. In response to this unfortunate event, the BHA, in conjunction with the Point-to-Point Authority (PPA), promptly initiated the necessary procedures.

In a joint statement issued on Monday, the BHA and PPA announced their visit to the racecourse site to conduct a thorough evaluation. This comprehensive review will involve close collaboration with the racecourse management, medical teams, and relevant stakeholders. Furthermore, they are fully committed to assisting the police and/or environmental health officer in their investigations.

The medical facilities and teams present at Charing Racecourse on Sunday adhered to the required standards, ensuring that Mr Kirkby received immediate and proper care. Within an impressive 30 seconds of his fall, a medical team was attending to him. Unfortunately, despite their prompt and dedicated response, Mr. Kirkby's injuries were severe and, tragically, his life could not be saved. Additional support was provided by both road and air ambulances.

While acknowledging the inherent risks associated with horse racing, it is crucial to thoroughly understand the factors contributing to such incidents and learn from them. The BHA remains resolute in its commitment to assess every incident and utilise the findings to continuously enhance safety standards. They extend their heartfelt condolences to Keagan Kirkby's family, friends, and colleagues within and beyond the racing industry. The Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF) is coordinating support for the Kirkby family, his workplace, and all those affected by this deeply saddening event.

Keagan Kirkby held a highly esteemed position at Paul Nicholls' Somerset yard, where his contributions were greatly valued. Having recently ridden work on the successful horse Afadil at Musselburgh, Kirkby was recognised as the stable's employee of the month in December 2021. He had also been shortlisted for the Rider/Groom category in the 2024 Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards.
