Teahupoo Secures Stayers' Victory for Elliott

Gordon Elliott secures consecutive triumphs in the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle as Teahupoo charges up the Cheltenham slope to claim Festival glory.

The seven-year-old, who placed third behind seasoned stablemate Sire Du Berlais as the 9-4 favourite a year ago, displayed no errors in his Prestbury Park comeback under the guidance of Jack Kennedy, who, alongside the Cullentra House trainer, marked his first success of the week.

Commencing as the well-supported 5-4 favourite after clinching a second Hatton’s Grace title last December, Teahupoo was steered with assurance and allowed ample space as he navigated a broad route on his recent Cotswolds venture.

Kennedy steadily propelled his steed into contention two hurdles from the finish, notwithstanding a minor hiccup at the penultimate obstacle. Despite the challenge posed by Flooring Porter as they approached the climax, Teahupoo swiftly asserted his dominance. After clearing the final hurdle with a slim lead, he sprinted ahead in the concluding stages, ultimately outpacing the resilient Flooring Porter.

Reflecting on the victory, Elliott expressed his satisfaction:

“Securing this win is a remarkable feat for the team after some near misses. Teahupoo excels when fresh, prompting our direct entry into this event. While the last few days have been challenging, the team’s relentless effort has finally paid off with this triumph.”

Regarding Teahupoo’s future, Elliott remarked:

“Although we won’t rule out a transition, he is currently set to continue hurdling. Aintree and Punchestown host appealing races for his potential participation, and we will assess our options accordingly.”

Recounting Flooring Porter’s commendable performance, Gavin Cromwell commented:

“Despite the disappointment of second place, Flooring Porter exhibited unwavering determination throughout the race. His valiant effort was evident as he maintained his pursuit until the very end.”

Joseph O’Brien, acknowledging Home By The Lee’s third-place finish, remarked:

“It is gratifying to witness his resurgence amidst the formidable competition that prevailed.”

Paul Gilligan lauded Buddy One’s fourth-place finish, stating:

“Buddy One’s exceptional performance, albeit hindered by less-than-ideal ground conditions, was commendable. While contemplating future engagements, our focus remains on delivering victories akin to our previous success.”
