Tamfana is expected to step back down to a mile

David Menuisier’s talented filly Tamfana is expected to step back down to a mile for the Atalanta Stakes at Sandown.

The filly, a two-time winner at two, notably secured a nine-and-a-half-length victory in a restricted fillies’ maiden at Kempton and a Group Three win in the Prix Miesque at Chantilly.

This season, Tamfana began her campaign in France with a third-place finish in the Prix Imprudence. Despite being a 33-1 outsider in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket in early May, she outperformed expectations by finishing a promising fourth. She was held up briefly in the penultimate furlong but came home strongly to be beaten by just a length.

Following a step-up in trip for the Prix de Diane at Chantilly, she finished a close third, beaten by three-quarters of a length by Sparkling Plenty and Survie, both of whom have since maintained strong form. A fourth-place finish in the Grand Prix de Paris over a mile and a half led connections to reconsider campaigning her over extended distances. As a result, it is likely that she will revert to a mile for her next race.

Menuisier confirmed, “Tamfana is likely to return for the Atalanta Stakes at Sandown on August 31st. After that, she may target either the Sun Chariot at Newmarket or the Prix de l’Opera at Longchamp the following day.”
