Stoute’s Final Chapter Ends as Wanderlust Finishes Last at Nottingham

The legendary career of Sir Michael Stoute came to a close without a fairytale finish on Wednesday as Wanderlust, expected to be the 78-year-old’s final runner, finished last at Nottingham. Stoute, one of racing’s most esteemed trainers, had announced in September that he would retire at the end of the 2024 flat season, which concludes at Doncaster on Saturday. With no further entries this week, Wanderlust took centre stage in the Goodbye For 2024 From Nottingham Racecourse Handicap.

Despite going off as the 9-4 favourite under jockey Richard Kingscote, Wanderlust struggled from early on, showing signs of fatigue before the home turn and ultimately finishing last in the 12-horse field.

Stoute’s illustrious career is marked by iconic champions like 1981 Derby winner Shergar, as well as a reputation for patience and a meticulous approach to training. Over his career, Stoute claimed ten Champion Trainer titles, six Derby victories, and 16 British Classics, while also conquering major global races like the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Japan Cup, Dubai World Cup, and Breeders’ Cup.

In his retirement announcement on September 10, Stoute expressed gratitude for his career, stating, "I have decided to retire from training at the end of this season. I would like to thank all my owners and staff for the support they have given me over the years. It has been a great and enjoyable journey."
