State Man Poised for Champion Hurdle Rematch at Cheltenham Festival, Stronger Than Ever

Willie Mullins is confident that State Man will return to Cheltenham as a stronger contender this year, seeking to close the gap on the dominant Constitution Hill in the Unibet Champion Hurdle.

Despite finishing nine lengths behind Nicky Henderson's National Hunt superstar in their previous encounter, State Man has since achieved four more Grade One triumphs, notably defeating Bob Olinger by a comfortable five and a half lengths in the Irish Champion Hurdle.

However, State Man's stablemate and rival, Impaire Et Passe, failed to deliver in that race. In contrast, Constitution Hill has only had one run this season, but Mullins anticipates Henderson will have his defending champion in optimal condition. Mullins expressed his confidence in State Man's readiness for the Champion Hurdle, emphasising the horse's impressive form.

He also acknowledged Henderson's knack for preparing his horses effectively for Cheltenham, even when it may seem they haven't had enough races. Mullins anticipates an exhilarating race, recognizing that State Man is stronger this year, although he is unsure if they are necessarily better.

Mullins entrusted jockey Paul Townend with determining the race tactics and expressed satisfaction with State Man's current position. Having previously triumphed in the race with Hurricane Fly, Faugheen, and Annie Power, Mullins believes that State Man possesses unique qualities, such as excellent jumping ability and unwavering consistency.

The race sponsor currently lists Constitution Hill as the 1-3 favourite, followed by State Man at 5-2, and another Closutton contender, Lossiemouth, at odds of 12-1.
