Sir Gino Takes on Fences: A New Chapter in His Racing Career

Last season’s standout juvenile hurdler, Sir Gino, is set to transition to chasing this season, trainer Nicky Henderson has revealed. The French import dazzled with two impressive victories in his early British career—a commanding 14-length triumph at Kempton during Christmas and a dominant 10-length win over the talented Burdett Road in a Triumph Hurdle Trial at Cheltenham in January.

Although Sir Gino missed the Triumph Hurdle at the Festival in March, he concluded his season on a high note with a Grade One win at Aintree. Over the summer, his connections carefully debated whether to aim for the Champion Hurdle or venture into the realm of larger obstacles.

While Sir Gino's name appeared among entries for the Fighting Fifth Hurdle on November 30—a comeback target for Constitution Hill—Henderson later clarified the plans. He shared that after extensive discussions with owners Joe and Marie Donnelly and jockey Nico de Boinville, the decision was made to pursue a career over fences.

Henderson explained that the presence of stable star Constitution Hill and fellow Donnelly-owned contender State Man made the choice relatively straightforward. He added that Sir Gino has already shown promise in schooling over fences, and should the venture prove unsuccessful, reverting to hurdles remains an option, citing their past success with Buveur D’Air as a precedent.

The plan is for Sir Gino to debut in the two-mile-two-furlong beginners’ chase at Kempton on November 25—a race previously used by the stable for stars like Altior and Shishkin. Henderson described it as a suitable and "friendly" starting point. Although Sir Gino holds an entry for the Fighting Fifth Hurdle, Henderson noted this was only precautionary, should unforeseen circumstances affect Constitution Hill’s participation.

As Sir Gino prepares for this exciting next step, anticipation is building to see how the talented four-year-old performs in his new role over fences.
