Shouldvebeenaring is set to race at the Betfred Cup

Last year’s runner-up, Shouldvebeenaring, is set for another shot at the Betfred Sprint Cup following a strong performance at York last week.

The grey, trained by Richard Hannon, finished third in the Group Two City of York Stakes behind the surprising winner Breege. This was his first run since a Group Three victory at Deauville in early July.

With a future at stud awaiting him after this season, owners Middleham Park Racing are eager to boost his stallion value with a Group One win. The Sprint Cup at Haydock, where he was narrowly beaten by Regional last year, is seen as a prime opportunity.

"He’s proven himself at Group Two and Group One level, and our goal now is to secure that Group One win before he heads to stud," said Tim Palin of Middleham Park.

"His performance at York was solid, though the extra distance due to the rails being doled out slightly affected his stamina. He’s more of a six to seven-furlong horse," Palin continued.

"Oisin Murphy felt he made a strong move to win, but might have been slightly fatigued at the end. Nonetheless, it was a great run that set him up well for Haydock."

Palin added that Haydock is the planned next step, noting that the horse performs better on quicker ground. With favourable weather forecasted, they hope for optimal conditions.

Shouldvebeenaring’s future plans include potential runs in France and the U.S., with final decisions based on upcoming performances and conditions.
