Shin Emperor is set to pursue a bold double

Japanese contender Shin Emperor is set to pursue a bold double in the Irish Champion Stakes and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe following a successful workout at ParisLongchamp.

The three-year-old colt boasts an impressive pedigree, being a French-bred full-brother to Sottsass, who followed a similar path to Arc victory in 2020.

Shin Emperor, last seen finishing third in the Japanese Derby in late May, appeared in excellent form during a public gallop in Paris on Sunday.

Trained by Yoshito Yahagi, who has notable international successes including Breeders’ Cup wins and Panthalassa’s triumph in the Saudi Cup, the Siyouni colt aims to improve upon the performances of El Condor Pasa and Orfevre, who both finished second in the Arc for Japan.

Owner Susumu Fujita’s racing manager, Hiroshi Ando, shared with Sky Sports Racing: "I spoke with the assistant trainers, and the rider reported that Shin Emperor adapted very well to the track. The ground wasn’t an issue for him, and we’re very pleased with his performance today. Given his French background and pedigree, it makes sense for us to be here. He’s really settled into France; when he arrived in Chantilly, he seemed right at home! He appeared very comfortable and enjoyed the French oats, which is unusual for Japanese horses. He’s clearly enjoying his time in France."

Shin Emperor is set to compete in a strong field at the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown on Saturday, where he will face top competitors like Economics, Auguste Rodin, and Los Angeles.

Ando noted, "We’re aiming to replicate the success of his full-brother Sottsass, who also ran in the Irish Champion Stakes (finishing fourth). We believe this race is a great fit for him, and after today’s gallop, he seems well-prepared. Our goal is to be ready for the Arc afterwards, so we need to manage his condition carefully. We respect the Irish Champion Stakes and will give it our best effort."

Jockey Ryusei Sakai, who will fly in to ride Shin Emperor, is highly regarded despite his youth. "He’s a talented young jockey who rode in the Kentucky Derby this year (finishing third) and won both the UAE Derby and Saudi Derby with Forever Young," said Ando. "He also has experience at Longchamp, so we’re confident in his ability."
