Securing a Hat-trick: Mullins and Townend Triumph Again with Tactical Move

In a Grade Three Bar One Racing 'Extra Places At Cheltenham' Directors Plate Novice Chase, Tactical Move, the 1/2 favourite, overcame two competitors to secure victory after Flanking Maneuver, the second market choice, departed early.

The ten-year-old gelding, under the guidance of trainer Willie Mullins and jockey Paul Townend, displayed determination at Naas, though his fencing left room for improvement and his triumph was not entirely convincing.

This win marked another triumph for the successful Mullins-Townend duo, following earlier achievements with Olympic Man and Fun Fun Fun. Despite his lack of experience, Tactical Move surged ahead in the final moments, outpacing the mare Jumping Jet by three lengths.

Reflecting on the race, Townend admitted,

"He didn't jump as smoothly as usual. I was eager to ride him, but I struggled to find a steady rhythm as he veered left constantly. Despite appearances, I felt in control throughout."

Townend's post-race report highlighted Tactical Move's tendency to jump poorly and favour the left side. The stewards examined a potential incident involving Flanking Maneuver and Tactical Move at the first fence, where interference could have occurred due to Flanking Maneuver's fall. However, after reviewing the footage, the stewards concluded no foul play had taken place, and no further action was deemed necessary.
