Ruling Court clashes against The Lion In Winter

Ruling Court, the early favourite for next year’s 2000 Guineas and Derby, faces a test against The Lion In Winter in the Tattersalls Acomb Stakes at York.

The Godolphin-owned colt, trained by Charlie Appleby, impressed on debut at Sandown, winning by over five lengths. Purchased for €2.3 million, he will be ridden by William Buick, who is eager to see him progress further.

Appleby believes York’s galloping track will suit Ruling Court and is optimistic about his chances in the increased 11-runner field, which includes Aidan O’Brien’s The Lion In Winter, a strong Derby contender.

The Lion In Winter, who won impressively at the Curragh, will look to exploit any weaknesses in Ruling Court. O’Brien is confident the York experience will benefit him.

Diablo Rojo, impressive on debut at Redcar, steps up in class and could be a strong competitor, according to his rider David Egan.

Other notable entries include Andrew Balding’s Jouncy, who steps up in trip after a maiden win at Goodwood, and Ralph Beckett’s Mr Chaplin, who has also won recently. Rossa Ryan, riding Mr Chaplin, is hopeful for a strong performance.
