Romantic Warrior Eyes Ambitious Middle East Campaign

Trainer Danny Shum has unveiled an ambitious plan for Romantic Warrior, aiming for a three-race campaign in the Middle East following the horse’s historic third consecutive Hong Kong Cup victory. With this win, Romantic Warrior surpassed Golden Sixty to become Hong Kong’s highest-earning racehorse.

Known for his adaptability, Romantic Warrior has already showcased his talent internationally, with victories in Australia’s Cox Plate and Japan’s Yasuda Kinen. Shum expressed confidence in the horse’s readiness for further travel, stating,

“He’s pulled up well and is very happy. He’s already proven he can handle travel.”

The Middle East campaign is set to begin with a flight to Dubai on January 17. Shum revealed potential plans to run Romantic Warrior in the second round of the Maktoum Challenge or the Jebel Hatta on January 24, targeting the Dubai Turf in April. The Saudi Cup in February is also on the agenda, with a potential return to Dubai for the Dubai World Cup or Dubai Turf on April 5.

Owner Peter Lau is eager for Romantic Warrior to take on these challenges, and while the horse has never raced on dirt, Shum remains optimistic.

“We think he can handle the dirt, though he’s yet to race on it. Fingers crossed he adapts well,” he added.

With James McDonald likely to remain in the saddle, Romantic Warrior’s upcoming Middle East campaign promises to be a thrilling new chapter in his illustrious career.
