Robert Cooper retired

Sky Sports Racing presenter Robert Cooper retired in his signature style at Yarmouth on Tuesday. Known affectionately as 'Sir Bob,' Cooper's broadcasting career spanned nearly 30 years.

Starting with Mecca Bookmakers, Cooper moved to The Racing Channel, now Sky Sports Racing, where he made his mark. Yarmouth honoured him with the Happy Retirement Robert Cooper Handicap, which featured two divisions.

Reflecting on his career, Cooper told Sky Sports Racing that he had faced his share of challenges but enjoyed many more successes. He recalled his first day reporting at Leicester, speaking with William Haggas just before Haggas won the Derby with Shaamit, describing it as a highlight for him.

Cooper expressed pride in having presented major events like Royal Ascot and Cheltenham, despite spending the last few years at smaller meetings. He mentioned feeling overwhelmed by the generosity he received that day, including gestures from the racecourses and the personal cards and gifts. He concluded that it had been an incredible journey and expressed gratitude for all the support he had experienced.
