Real Steel Claims Memorable Victory in Munster National
Real Steel made a triumphant return to form, securing a commanding front-running victory in the BoyleSports JT McNamara Munster National under the guidance of local trainer Eric McNamara. The 11-year-old performer, a former dual Grade Two winner and sixth in the 2020 Cheltenham Gold Cup for Willie Mullins, had previously raced with Paul Nicholls before McNamara acquired him for £27,000 over two years ago.
Though Real Steel shocked the racing world with a stunning 33-1 win in the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown’s Christmas meeting two seasons back, he struggled to find similar success in eight subsequent races, with a disappointing performance in the recent Kerry National at Listowel. However, equipped with blinkers and a new, aggressive running style, he showcased his talent at Limerick as an 8-1 shot.
Rider Danny Mullins executed a perfect strategy, allowing Real Steel to jump fluidly and maintain control amid pressure from 13-8 favourite Horantzau d’Airy, ultimately triumphing by three and a half lengths.
“It’s a fantastic time for us, and winning this race is truly special,” expressed McNamara, recalling his previous win in 1999. He praised Mullins' exceptional ride, stating, “We aimed to lead, and it worked perfectly. Bringing this horse back to form is magical.”
In addition to the victory, Real Steel secured a €20,000 sweepstake prize for Down Syndrome Limerick, generously sponsored by prominent owner JP McManus.
