Previous winners of the Derby at Epsom and Juddmonte International at York

On Wednesday, City Of Troy will aim to become the sixth horse to win the Derby at Epsom and then claim the Juddmonte International at York in the same season. The last horse to achieve this feat was a decade ago. Here’s a look at the previous winners:

Australia (2014)

Trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by his son Joseph, Australia won the Derby with ease and followed up with a dominant victory in the Irish Derby. At York, he proved his speed and stamina, defeating The Grey Gatsby by two lengths. Owner Michael Tabor commented, “Winning the Derby is incredible, but Australia’s performance at a mile and a quarter showed his speed.”

Sea The Stars (2009)

John Oxx’s superstar won the 2000 Guineas, the Derby, and the Eclipse before heading to York. There, he outlasted Mastercraftsman and two other rivals in a race with just three competitors. Jockey Mick Kinane praised Sea The Stars as “the best horse I have ridden, and it’s a privilege to have him.”

Authorised (2007)

After a spectacular Derby win, Authorised suffered an Eclipse defeat but rebounded with a victory at York over Dylan Thomas. Trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam said, “Epsom was special for me, but this win was for Authorised, who proved himself despite some criticism.”

Troy (1979)

Troy, a strong Derby winner under Willie Carson, went on to win the Irish Derby and the King George before York. In the Benson & Hedges Gold Cup (now the Juddmonte International), Troy overcame a challenging position to win comfortably.

Roberto (1972)

Vincent O’Brien’s Roberto narrowly won the Derby, was beaten in the Irish Derby, and was initially ridden by Lester Piggott at York. With Piggott on Rheingold, Roberto was ridden by Braulio Baeza, who set a fast pace. Roberto held off Brigadier Gerard, securing a three-length victory and delivering Brigadier Gerard’s only defeat in his career.
