Potential Retirement Beckons for Paisley Park Amid Stayers’ Hurdle Triumph

Emma Lavelle is poised to bid farewell to Paisley Park in a triumphant manner, should he clinch a second Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle victory at the upcoming Cheltenham Festival.

The seasoned contender triumphed in the prestigious Grade One race five years ago. Despite a setback in his attempt for consecutive wins a year later, he secured third place in both the 2021 and 2022 editions.

His recent resurgence defies his age, as he impressed with notable performances this winter, claiming second place in the Long Distance Hurdle, the Long Walk, and the Cleeve Hurdle by a whisker each time. A victorious return for Paisley Park would undoubtedly be a crowd-pleaser at this year's Festival, and Lavelle expresses utmost satisfaction with his current form.

"Touch wood, he's in excellent condition. Everything has gone smoothly, and he's in top shape for Cheltenham,"

Lavelle shared with talkSPORT. Despite the significant challenge for a 12-year-old, she remains optimistic, citing the unpredictable nature of the race and the familiar competitors in contention.

The seasoned trainer acknowledges the possibility of Paisley Park's retirement, particularly if he triumphs at Prestbury Park. Reflecting on the horse's potential farewell, she noted,

"If he secures victory, it would mark a remarkable conclusion to his career. Winning it again after five years would be an extraordinary feat."

Lavelle emphasises the importance of considering Paisley Park's well-being and enjoyment, highlighting that his passion for racing will ultimately determine his future. She concludes,

"He dictates his own destiny, and we will respect his decision. Whether he continues or not, his happiness and fulfilment remain our priority in this sport where longevity is a rarity."
