Pauling Optimistic for Henry’s Friend Performance

Trainer Ben Pauling remains optimistic about Henry’s Friend securing a major victory this season, despite a fifth-place finish in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury.

The seven-year-old, a winner of three novice chases last season, including a Grade Two triumph at Ascot, impressed on his seasonal debut. Though beaten by Kandoo Kid by seven and a half lengths, Pauling believes a jumping error cost Henry’s Friend a better result.

"He ran a blinder but hit the third down the back hard," Pauling explained. "Ben [Jones] almost went over his head, and it knocked him out of rhythm. Until then, he was travelling beautifully. After that mistake, he got in deep to a couple of fences, which ended his chances of winning."

Despite the setback, Pauling is confident about Henry’s Friend’s prospects:

"It was a strong performance, and he’ll be competitive in similar handicaps as the season progresses."

Bowtogreatness Struggles in Rehearsal Chase

Stablemate Bowtogreatness, who skipped the Coral Gold Cup to run in the Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle, had a disappointing outing. Pressured for the lead early by eventual winner Frero Banbou, the eight-year-old ran too keenly and was pulled up by Kielan Woods.

Pauling admitted the race plan backfired:

"That was an absolute disaster. We’ve been working hard to get him to settle at home by riding him from the front, and he showed promise with a win at Newbury. But the early pressure at Newcastle made him too keen, and he ran with the choke out for most of the race."

Looking ahead, Pauling remains determined to harness Bowtogreatness’s talent:

"He’s a quirky horse with loads of ability. We’ll go back to the drawing board and work on getting him to settle again."

While both horses faced challenges, Pauling is optimistic about their potential to deliver standout performances in the months ahead.
