Patrick brings Killarney triumph for Sean Doyle

After winning the bumper at Killarney, Patrick Mullins had a fascinating story to tell. First-time competitor Kalium (4/1) for Sean Doyle won the An Excellent Choice (Pro-Am) INH Flat Race in spectacular fashion under the expert guidance of the amateur who broke the record.

"I was actually on a stag weekend in Chester and Sean (Doyle) texted me as I was getting on the plane on Friday so I came home a bit early to ride him and it was worth it. I think a few of the lads might have backed this fella as well," said Mullins (who got a 2-day whip ban). "Normally it's not a good thing when you get a call to ride a horse at 9.50am, as it means somebody else has turned him down, but you take notice with the Doyles, as they are fairly sharp. He isn't the biggest but handled that good ground well. Whether he'd handle the heavy ground I don't know but with his pedigree, you'd imagine he would. There was no pace so I lobbed along in front and he kept going. He was well able to gallop and was impressive."

At the conclusion, four-year-old Gentlewave gelding Kalium, owned by the trainer's brother Donnchadh, had no fewer than nineteen lengths to spare over Derryville.

Regarding his use of the whip in the final stages of this race, Mr. P.W. Mullins, rider of Kalium (FR), was questioned by the Raceday Stewards. The affected rider provided evidence. Mr. P.W. Mullins testified that he had ridden in a front-running race and had no idea he was that far ahead of the pack at that moment. After watching a replay of the race and weighing the evidence, the Raceday Stewards determined that Mr. P.W. Mullins had violated R.10.3(c), which prohibits hitting a horse needlessly when it is obviously winning the race or placing as high as possible. Taking into account his prior offences, they suspended him for two race days. For this inquiry, Mr. S. McDonogh was not present.

The Florida Strait rider, Mr. Hamilton, who had training from Joseph Patrick O'Brien, informed the Clerk of the Scales that his horse never made it.

Eoin Christopher McCarthy's rider Shane Fenelon of Kingdom Calling (FR) reported to the Clerk of the Scales that his mount gurgled down the back straight.

At the request of the Raceday Stewards, the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Veterinary Officer evaluated Florida Strait, who is trained by Joseph Patrick O'Brien, and concluded that the animal is post-race normal.
