Owen Considering Burdett's Return to Flat Racing

Burdett Road, the promising four-year-old, may return to Flat racing this autumn following an unfortunate injury that dashed his chances at the JCB Triumph Hurdle.

Formerly trained by Michael Bell, he achieved success at Royal Ascot before transitioning smoothly to hurdling, emerging as a top contender for the Cheltenham Festival.

After an impressive win at Prestbury Park last November, Burdett Road was considered a favourite for the Triumph Hurdle. Though Sir Gino later overtook him in the market, plans were still in place for a run in the prestigious juvenile Grade One race at the Festival. However, a setback forced him to miss the event, prompting trainer James Owen to consider Flat racing options before returning to hurdles later in the year.

Owen confirmed,

"He's in good shape and will likely resume training in a week or two. He won't be hurdling this season; instead, we might give him a break and consider some autumn Flat races. His return to hurdling next season is on the cards, potentially targeting the Greatwood, though specifics are yet to be decided."

In Burdett Road's absence, Owen can look forward to Sweet Fantasy, an exciting mare owned by the Gredley Family. With two impressive wins in hurdles, including a dominant performance at Catterick, she has caught the attention of her handler, who sees a promising future ahead. Owen explained,

"I opted not to enter her in the Mares' Novices' at Cheltenham and instead aimed for the Herring Queen Series final at Kelso. She's likely to compete in the final, and possibly at Aintree as well. With a bright future ahead, we may also consider Flat races for her next season."

Excitement surrounds Sweet Fantasy as she continues to impress Owen with her potential and development on the track.
