Notable Speech secured victory at Goodwood

Notable Speech made a triumphant return to form in the Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.

After a subpar performance in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, where he fell short of his earlier form, the Charlie Appleby-trained colt had something to prove.

Despite the absence of Rosallion, Notable Speech was not the favourite, with Henry Longfellow claiming that honour. However, after attempting to lead from the front, Aidan O’Brien’s runner-up at Ascot appeared vulnerable as the race approached the cutaway.

With William Buick holding a commanding position on Notable Speech, the Dubawi colt displayed his trademark acceleration, swiftly putting the race beyond reach and securing victory in just a few strides.

In doing so, the 3-1 chance became the first Guineas winner to capture the Sussex Stakes in the same season since Frankel.

The William Haggas-trained Maljoom finished second, a length and a half behind, while Facteur Cheval, who was second last year, claimed third for Jerome Reynier.

A thrilled William Buick commented that Notable Speech was "firing on all cylinders today." He noted that the colt’s Guineas victory had already showcased a rare turn of foot, which was once again on display. Buick expressed his joy, giving full credit to the team for getting Notable Speech back to his best after a disappointing performance in the St James’s Palace Stakes, which he described as "too bad to be true." He added that Notable Speech is an extraordinary horse who truly excites, calling it a privilege to ride him.
