Nickle Back Set to Make Comeback at Ascot

Trainer Sarah Humphrey is gearing up for Nickle Back's return, with the 1965 Chase at Ascot as a likely starting point for the promising gelding. After a spectacular debut season, where he showcased his talent by winning his chasing debut at Warwick by a significant margin, Nickle Back continued to impress. He secured another victory at Stratford in early November before trying his luck at Grade Two level, finishing second in both the John Francome Novices’ Chase at Newbury and the Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase at Kempton.

Despite being a 10-1 outsider for the Grade One Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase at Sandown, Nickle Back defied expectations to win by an impressive seven lengths, marking a memorable day for Humphrey and jockey James Best. However, the end of the season was less favourable, with a ninth-place finish at Aintree and a subsequent pull-up at the Josh Gifford Novices’ Handicap Chase. After a refreshing summer break, Nickle Back is back in training, and Humphrey feels optimistic about his prospects.

“He’s been well, he’s summered well, and we’re getting ready to go,” she remarked, confirming plans to aim for Ascot on November 23. Discussing potential future races, Humphrey added, “I’d rather go to Ascot first,” highlighting her excitement for the upcoming season, hoping for better conditions and a smoother run than last year.
