Mystical Power to Clash with Sir Gino in Fighting Fifth Hurdle
The BetMGM Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle on Saturday promises to be a thrilling affair as Willie Mullins’ highly-regarded Mystical Power takes on Nicky Henderson’s Sir Gino in the absence of the sidelined Constitution Hill.
Henderson, a record eight-time winner of the Grade One contest, originally planned to send Sir Gino over fences this season but has pivoted to Gosforth Park, aiming to uphold his dominant record in the race. Past winners under Henderson’s care include My Tent Or Yours, Buveur D’Air, and Epatante.
Mystical Power, owned by a powerhouse partnership of JP McManus, John Magnier, and Rich Ricci, enters as the main threat. The son of Galileo and the legendary mare Annie Power excelled in his novice campaign, capping it off with consecutive Grade One victories at Aintree and Punchestown. Mullins bypassed a competitive Morgiana Hurdle to focus on this opportunity.
“Willie is very happy with him, and all being well, the plan is to head to Newcastle,” said Frank Berry, racing manager for JP McManus. “It’ll be a good race, and we’re excited to get him out.”
The race also features an intriguing field of challengers, including Irish contender Colonel Mustard, who recently placed third in the Ascot Hurdle, Brentford Hope, runner-up in the Elite Hurdle, and Welsh Champion Hurdle victor Lump Sum. Other notable entries include Salver (needing softer ground), Benson, Kihavah, Nemean Lion, Tellherthename, and Take No Chances.
With the clash between Sir Gino and Mystical Power leading the narrative, this year’s Fighting Fifth Hurdle promises to be a captivating contest for fans and connections alike.
