Mullins' runner bounces back in style at Punchestown
Mister Policeman, trained by Willie Mullins, showcased a remarkable comeback after a surprising defeat in his previous race. The chestnut gelding, owned by Rich Ricci following his success in French hurdles as a four-year-old, triumphed in the Concept Colours Rated Novice Chase at Punchestown.
Having secured victory in his debut race under new ownership, Mister Policeman swiftly transitioned to Irish racing, starting with a comfortable win in a two-mile Cork hurdle last April. Subsequently, he smoothly moved on to fences at the beginning of the current season.
His first venture at Fairyhouse in November was triumphant, leading him to Naas in January where he entered as the favourite in a two-mile novice race. However, he faced a comprehensive defeat, finishing third behind Quilixios and Sa Fureur.
At Punchestown, the five-year-old sought redemption for his previous performance. Under the skilled guidance of jockey Paul Townend, Mister Policeman, the 1-2 favourite among five contenders, put on a stellar show. With improved form and a commendable round of jumping, he surged ahead, clinching victory by an impressive six-length margin.
Reflecting on the win, Mullins noted, "He’s still mastering the art of jumping and might excel over longer distances in due course. This race fits perfectly into his training regime and sets him up nicely for the upcoming season. There are exciting prospects ahead, and we may consider entering him into a novice handicap".
Mullins enjoyed a successful day with four wins, aided by jockey Townend who secured three victories. Notable among the wins was Tullyhill's triumph in the Madigan Group Irish EBF Sheila Bourke Novice Hurdle and Paggane's success in the Old House Kill Maiden Hurdle.
The day's fourth victory came from Sounds Victorius, partnered by Patrick Mullins, in the Lockton Insurance Brokers Supporting Athy Rugby (Pro/Am) INH Flat Race. Despite a strong display by Masterboy Davis, Mullins' mount clinched victory in the final strides.
Meanwhile, Rachael Blackmore steered Senior Chief to victory in the QuinnBet Beginners Chase over two miles and seven furlongs. The 2-9 favourite, who had shown promise in previous fence races, displayed determination to secure a narrow win.
Trainer Henry De Bromhead praised Senior Chief's performance, indicating a potential reevaluation by the handicapper. Looking ahead, a handicap race looms for Senior Chief as he continues his promising journey on the track.
