Ciaron Maher is already thinking ahead for Middle Earth, the four-year-old horse he co-owns with Qatar Racing, following a third-place finish in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot. The Melbourne Cup is a target for Maher, with the Caulfield Cup also potentially on the cards. However, Middle Earth will have at least one more race in Europe with trainers John and Thady Gosden before heading to Australia.
“He was a little slow to start, and the pace was moderate, but he finished strongly,” Maher said. “We are excited to bring him out here, and the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups are likely targets.”
Maher also has an interest in Pentle Bay, a New Bay colt who finished second in the Chesham Stakes and now co-owns with Teme Valley Racing. Additionally, Sayedaty Sadaty, fifth in the Derby for Andrew Balding, has been purchased by Australian Bloodstock, the team behind 2022 Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip.
“Our goal is to overcome the handicaps and secure a spot in the race,” said Luke Murrell of Australian Bloodstock. “Sayedaty Sadaty may be better suited for longer distances, like the 2400 metres at this stage. We are hopeful for impressive runs in his next races to confirm his potential for the Melbourne Cup.”
