Martin Brassil's unwavering belief in Fastorslow's capabilities fuels his anticipation of an audacious Cheltenham campaign

Martin Brassil is relishing the opportunity to field his star performer, Fastorslow, in the prestigious Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup.

With unwavering confidence, Brassil believes that his charge will rise to the occasion and deliver a remarkable performance. Fastorslow has already proven his mettle by triumphing over Galopin Des Champs, the reigning Cheltenham champion, in both the Punchestown Gold Cup last April and the John Durkan earlier this season. However, he faced a setback in the recent Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown, where he succumbed to Willie Mullins' formidable contender.

Despite finishing four and a half lengths behind, Fastorslow's display in the Dublin Racing Festival was nothing short of exceptional. The race played out favourably for Galopin Des Champs, the defending champion, yet Fastorslow's performance was commendable, especially considering his extended absence from competition since November 26. Brassil expressed his satisfaction with the run, emphasising the positive aspects of Fastorslow's return to the track.

There is speculation that Fastorslow could have posed a threat to Galopin Des Champs in the final stretch if not for a momentary distraction caused by Paul Townend's front-running mount at the last obstacle. Brassil, however, considers this incident insignificant in determining the outcome of the battle. He explained that while Fastorslow could have taken advantage of the situation, his cautious approach allowed Galopin Des Champs to maintain control and secure victory. Brassil believes that even without the interruption, the result would have likely remained the same, as Galopin Des Champs raced under his command.

As the Gold Cup approaches, Fastorslow is positioned as the second favourite at odds of 4-1. This will mark his fifth encounter with the odds-on favourite, and the head-to-head score currently stands at 2-2. Brassil anticipates a highly competitive event on March 15 at the iconic Prestbury Park. He acknowledges that the race will feature a plethora of talented contenders, adding to the challenge. Nevertheless, Brassil draws confidence from Fastorslow's past performances at Cheltenham, considering it a positive factor in their campaign. He commends the consistent and reliable nature of his horse, noting that while success may not always be guaranteed, Fastorslow never fails to give his best. With the race five weeks away, Brassil eagerly awaits the opportunity to compete and is optimistic about their chances.
