Marquand Eyes Glory with Porta Fortuna
Tom Marquand, fresh off his victory at Santa Anita last year, is eager to recreate that success at this year's Breeders' Cup, held at Del Mar. The talented jockey is poised with impressive rides, including Mick Appleby’s speedy Big Evs, who clinched a win for Marquand in the Juvenile Turf Sprint last year. Marquand will also ride Appleby’s Big Mojo in the Juvenile Turf Sprint and Hugo Palmer’s promising The Waco Kid in the Juvenile Turf, with hopes of replicating Big Evs' triumph.
However, the potential standout of Marquand’s line-up could be Porta Fortuna, set to compete in the Breeders' Cup Mile. Marquand has forged a strong partnership with Donnacha O’Brien’s filly this season, celebrating victories in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and the recent Matron Stakes in Leopardstown. Having narrowly missed a win at Santa Anita as a two-year-old, Marquand aims to conclude Porta Fortuna’s season on a high note in California.
“The Breeders’ Cup is a unique challenge," Marquand reflected. "It requires quick, responsive horses, especially in the juvenile races. I’m excited to have Big Evs again, and I hope this year mirrors last.”
With plans to race in Japan later this year, Marquand's ambition on an international scale is evident. As he prepares for the world championships, he cherishes the rigorous demands and the thrill that the Breeders' Cup offers, viewing it as an exciting culmination to the racing season.
