Mac’s Xpress secured a victory in Newmarket

Claire Howie made her birthday weekend unforgettable by riding Mac’s Xpress to victory in the 354th Newmarket Town Plate on Saturday. The amateur race, held over three-and-three-quarter miles, concluded the summer season at the July course.

Howie, an HGV driver and former British Army member, had previously competed in charity races at Wetherby and Warwick. She finally achieved her goal of winning a racecourse event, overcoming long-time leader Dancing Shadow in a thrilling finish.

She said, “I was emotional, crossing the line. It was a dream come true after trying for so long. I decided to conserve Mac’s Xpress’s energy and timed my push perfectly.”

Howie, who works delivering animal feed and rides out for Clare Ellam and David Loughnane, aims to get her full amateur licence and continues to pursue her passion for racing.

“I wanted to prove that age doesn’t matter. I’m thrilled to have achieved this milestone,” she added.
