The star of Los Angeles continues to shine after securing a determined victory in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes at York.
Having finished third behind Ballydoyle stablemate City Of Troy in the Derby, Aidan O’Brien’s Camelot colt claimed a Classic win in the Irish Derby at the Curragh on his last start. He was supplemented for this Group Two race and started as the 5-4 favourite under Ryan Moore, making him the first horse to win the Knavesmire contest carrying a penalty.
Settled in third as stablemates Euphoric and Illinois set the pace, Los Angeles responded when asked by Moore. He surged to the front despite strong challenges from Illinois and Harry Charlton’s King’s Gambit, holding on by a neck.
Following the race, Los Angeles was installed as the 5-2 favourite for the St Leger by Paddy Power, though connections are still weighing his autumn options.
O’Brien commented, “He was very tough, and we’re delighted with his performance. He’s a lazy horse who handles a mile and a half well. The decision on his next race will be up to the team, but while Illinois seems suited to longer trips, Los Angeles has the class to go shorter or stay longer. He’s a big, powerful horse with versatility on different ground.”
Charlton praised King’s Gambit’s performance, but has yet to finalise future plans.
“He ran a lovely race,” Charlton said. “William Buick felt he was stretched by the distance, as it seemed more like a mile and six rather than a mile and a half. He made good ground but was running on empty in the final stages. He’s suited to 10 or 12 furlongs in less extreme conditions.”
