Lieber Nicc triumphed in the opening Wexford Maiden Hurdle
Lieber Nicc made a strong finish from the back of the final flight to claim victory in the opening Wexford Maiden Hurdle at the Southeast track.
After finishing third in his comeback race at Clonmel in May, the five-year-old improved upon that performance to secure his first career win here.
The former Listed flat winner Sunchart was the 6/4 favourite and put in a solid showing, leading comfortably after five hurdles under the guidance of trainer Andrew Slattery.
With a narrow lead, as they approached the second last, Sunchart appeared to have the edge over In The Trenches, while Lieber Nicc, positioned in third, was urged on by Rachael Blackmore.
Lieber Nicc responded positively, finding a good gap on the inside to move into second by the final flight. He took the lead shortly afterwards, demonstrating superior stamina to finish a length and a quarter ahead of Sunchart as the 9/4 contender crossed the line.
Henry de Bromhead commented: “Sadly the Schuster’s aren’t here today but part of the crew are. It’s great that he has won, he deserved to win one and hopefully, he’ll progress now. I think the better ground helped him, he has got a bit of pace and is a nice horse. We have no major plan for him, but I’d say Listowel could be on the cards. The Schuster’s have a big connection with Listowel, so I’d say if there is something suitable there, that’s where he’ll go. We’d like to find something in between as well.”
