Kyprios affirmed his status as the premier stayer with a commanding victory in the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup.
The six-year-old, trained by Aidan O’Brien, dominated the staying division in 2022, clinching the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, the Goodwood Cup, and the Irish St Leger before finishing an unbeaten season with a stunning 20-length win in the Prix du Cadran.
Though a career-threatening injury limited him to just two outings last year, resulting in two losses, Kyprios has returned to top form this season, winning all three of his starts, including a successful defence of his Gold Cup title last month.
With Ryan Moore aboard, Kyprios was an 8-13 favourite to reclaim his Goodwood title. The crowd had little to worry about as the son of Galileo cruised through the two-mile race.
After a brief push around the home turn, Kyprios quickly regained his stride and effortlessly pulled away from the competition in the straight.
Sweet William, third in the Gold Cup, tried to challenge but could only manage a distant second, finishing four lengths behind Kyprios, who had more to spare. Gregory, another from Sweet William’s stable, was a head further back in third, while the popular veteran Trueshan, winner of the Goodwood Cup in 2021, came in fourth.
