Kinross is set to pursue a third City of York Stakes title

Ralph Beckett’s Kinross is set to pursue a third City of York Stakes title following his third-place finish in the Lennox Stakes at Goodwood.

The seven-year-old is a seasoned competitor, regularly appearing in Group races over six and seven furlongs. His impressive resume includes two wins in the Lennox Stakes, two City of York Stakes victories, a Prix de la Foret triumph, and a Group One win in the Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot.

In his fourth attempt at the Lennox Stakes, Kinross, the 7-2 favourite under Rossa Ryan, was a familiar face among the field of eight. Despite his previous wins in 2021 and 2023 and a narrow second-place finish to Sandrine in 2022, he found himself with a lot of ground to make up after Art Power and John and Thady Gosden’s Audience set a fast pace.

Kinross finished strongly in third place, with Art Power a length ahead and Audience four lengths in front.

Despite being in the latter stages of his career, Kinross displayed his usual enthusiasm. He will follow his established path, aiming for the City of York on August 24.

Jamie McCalmont, racing manager for Kinross’s owner Marc Chan, stated that the horse is in good condition, and they were very pleased with his performance. He confirmed that Kinross’s program is proceeding as planned, with the horse set to run at York and possibly in France next. McCalmont noted that the pace at Goodwood did not suit Kinross’s style, but the horse’s enthusiasm remained high, and he finished strongly. As long as Kinross continues to show eagerness to race, there are no plans to retire him.
