Kathmandu targets to visit Qatar Oak Tree Stakes
Brian Meehan views Wednesday’s Visit Qatar Oak Tree Stakes at Goodwood as a “logical” target for his French 1,000 Guineas runner-up, Kathmandu.
The daughter of Showcasing, who won on her second and final juvenile outing at Southwell, began her Classic campaign with a commendable third-place finish at 40-1 in the Nell Gwyn at Newmarket. She validated that performance by narrowly losing to Rouhiya in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches at ParisLongchamp and later placed fifth in the Prix Jean Prat at Deauville against colts.
Dropping to Group Three level and returning to compete against her sex, Kathmandu is set to race at Goodwood, where Meehan is hopeful she can finally shine.
Meehan stated that Kathmandu is well-prepared for the race at Goodwood, calling it a logical choice despite uncertain weather.
Kathmandu will compete against Jabaara from Roger Varian, who has Group One experience after a recent strong showing in the Falmouth Stakes. Varian believes Jabaara is in good form, noting her wide draw as a minor setback, but is optimistic about her performance at seven furlongs.
Ryan Moore will ride Fair Angellica for Richard Hughes, who recently won a Listed race in Deauville. Moore expressed confidence in her ability to perform well on quick ground despite some rain in the forecast.
