Julie Harrington is leaving BHA

After four years as the chief executive of the British Horseracing Authority, Julie Harrington has announced her decision to step down from her role. She will remain in the position until the end of the year to ensure a smooth transition. The BHA is already searching for a replacement for the outgoing chair, Joe Saumarez Smith, who will step down in May 2025.

Harrington expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to lead the BHA during a period of significant change and development in the sport. She believes that with the Industry Strategy in place, it is the right time for someone else to lead the sport into its next phase of growth. Harrington plans to pursue a non-executive career in the future.

She highlighted the progress made in improving governance and fostering unity within the industry and encouraged stakeholders to continue working together to attract new audiences and enhance the customer experience. Harrington expressed confidence in the potential of British horseracing to achieve great things if the sense of unity and shared purpose is maintained.

The BHA board is actively seeking Harrington's successor as CEO and informing the board of her intentions allows for a smooth handover process. Harrington expressed her deep appreciation for the opportunity to be a part of British horseracing and wished the industry continued success in the years to come.
