Jonbon Prepares for Challenging Shloer Chase Return at Cheltenham

Nico de Boinville believes Jonbon will need to be at his best to defend his title in the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham on Friday, despite being the favourite. The eight-year-old has won nine of 11 races over fences and claimed victory in this race last year, beating Edwardstone by nearly 10 lengths. However, his recent appearances at Cheltenham include a loss in the Clarence House Chase and a missed opportunity at the Queen Mother Champion Chase due to stable issues.

Facing Jonbon in the Shloer Chase are three competitors, including his familiar rival Edwardstone, along with Boothill and Unexpected Party. De Boinville remains confident, though he respects the competition.

“We’ve locked horns with Edwardstone before and come out on top, but we still need to be on our A-game,” he said.
JP McManus' racing manager, Frank Berry, echoed the team’s optimism, stating, “Jonbon finished last season on a high, and we’re looking forward to seeing him back.” Edwardstone’s jockey, Tom Cannon, hopes improved ground conditions will work in their favour. He noted, “It’s 3-0 to Jonbon, but better ground might suit us.”
Boothill’s trainer, Harry Fry, acknowledges the challenge but believes his horse deserves a shot. “We know we have ground to make up on ratings, but Boothill is good enough to be there,” Fry said.

With all contenders set to perform, Friday’s Shloer Chase promises a competitive showdown as Jonbon returns to Cheltenham, aiming to defend his title.
