Jonbon Eyes Historic Tingle Creek Double at Sandown
Trainer Nicky Henderson is optimistic that his star chaser Jonbon can emulate the legendary Kauto Star by securing back-to-back victories in the prestigious Betfair Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown on Saturday.
Henderson, a master of producing elite two-mile chasers, has overseen the careers of greats like Sprinter Sacre, Altior, and Remittance Man. He believes seven-time Grade One winner Jonbon deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as those icons.
“Jonbon deserves high star status. Any horse with his Grade One record is exceptional. He matches up with the likes of Sprinter and Altior – he’s a solid character and a great competitor,” Henderson said.
Jonbon, unbeaten in four starts at Sandown, will look to defend his crown following a victorious seasonal debut in the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham. He faces familiar rivals from that race, including runner-up Boothill, third-placed Edwardstone, and Unexpected Party.
Henderson is confident Jonbon can maintain his dominance:
“He’s in great shape, and the Shloer was an ideal stepping stone. While Edwardstone and Boothill are bound to improve, so is Jonbon. We’re in a good place heading into the Tingle Creek.”
The trainer also expressed little concern about the prospect of soft ground:
“He’s versatile and handles most conditions, which is what you’d expect from a top-class horse.”
Future Plans: Aiming for the Queen Mother
While Jonbon impressed over longer trips last season, including a Melling Chase victory at Aintree, Henderson emphasized his focus on the two-mile division, with the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham as a key target.
“The plan was always to aim for the Queen Mother, and we’ll stick to two miles for now. While the King George would be intriguing, it would take him out of the Tingle Creek equation. One race at a time.”
Constitution Hill Update
Henderson also provided an update on his Champion Hurdle hero Constitution Hill, who missed the Fighting Fifth Hurdle due to a minor setback.
“He’s back in routine work and will continue building towards the Christmas Hurdle on Boxing Day. Everything appears on track.”
Jonbon’s bid for Tingle Creek history and Constitution Hill’s anticipated return ensure a busy and exciting festive period for Henderson and his Seven Barrows team.
