Jazzy Matty secured his first win since the 2023 Cheltenham Festival at Wexford today, triumphing in the Traynors Of Wexford Beginners Chase for new trainer Cian Collins.
Previously trained by Gordon Elliott, Jazzy Matty won the Fred Winter Hurdle at Cheltenham in March 2023 but has been struggling since then. Sold in February as part of Caldwell Construction's dispersal sale, he ended a string of disappointing performances today.
After falling on his chase debut last month, Jazzy Matty was ridden patiently by Jordan Gainford. He moved into fourth place at the second-last fence and took the lead on the run-in to defeat Clifftop. Starting as a 14/1 outsider, he showed renewed form.
Collins remarked that Jazzy Matty had not performed to his best since Cheltenham, but they were confident in his ability. The goal was to rebuild his confidence, which was achieved successfully. Collins plans to keep him on good ground and hopes he will develop into a strong staying chaser next year. He also praised his team, including Denis O'Regan, Davy Condon, and Ray Loftus, for their excellent work.
