I Am Maximus Triumphs Over Vanillier in Bobbyjo Chase

I Am Maximus secured his spot in the upcoming Randox Grand National by triumphing over last year's Aintree runner-up, Vanillier, in the Tote.ie Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse.

Trained under the guidance of Willie Mullins, I Am Maximus showcased his prowess at the venue where he had previously clinched victory in the Irish Grand National. Following this impressive performance, he is now considered a strong contender at odds of 12-1 for the Aintree event on April 13.

Mullins, adopting a similar strategy used with Hedgehunter in 2005, utilised the Bobbyjo Chase as a stepping stone for I Am Maximus. Despite facing a tough challenge, giving away 12lb to Vanillier from Gavin Cromwell's stable, the even-money favourite, guided by Jody McGarvey, displayed a dominant performance over the nearly three-mile-two-furlong course. I Am Maximus surged ahead in the straight, crossing the finish line a striking 14 lengths ahead of the competition.

Reflecting on the race, Mullins commended the outstanding performance of his horse, particularly noting his exceptional acceleration upon seeing the stands. He expressed confidence in I Am Maximus's potential, hinting at a possible future as a Gold Cup contender. However, for now, the focus remains on the Grand National at Aintree, with Mullins emphasising the horse's adaptability to varying ground conditions.

Meanwhile, Sean Flanagan, aboard Vanillier, acknowledged the competitive field and expressed satisfaction with his horse's performance, considering the stronger opposition this year. Despite finishing second, Flanagan remains optimistic about Vanillier's prospects at Aintree, where he will carry a reduced 8lb weight difference against I Am Maximus. Anticipation is high as both horses gear up for the esteemed event, with Vanillier's jockey eagerly looking forward to the challenge ahead.
